MICHAEL D. RICHARDS, RPAProject Archaeologist EDUCATION
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCEMr. Richards is a Registered Professional Archaeologist with over 11 years experience in Cultural Resource Management and Public Archaeology in California. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology, with an emphasis in Public Archaeology, from California State University, Northridge and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles. His Master’s thesis looked at the interregional and intraregional trade and manufacture of Olmec ceramics, and was focused on the Olmec settlement of La Venta, located in the state of Tabasco, Mexico and the sphere of trade between Tres Zapotes and San Lorenzo. Mr. Richards has directed and participated in numerous and varied California studies over the years that include field survey, testing, data recovery, and evaluation for the National Register of Historic Places. These investigations were mainly focused within the California and Great Basin deserts, as well as the coastal and inland culture areas of southern California. He has authored more than 23 technical reports. Other areas of research interest for Mr. Richards include pottery and rock art analysis and the prehistory the American Southwest, Mesoamerican and Japan. In addition, Mr. Richards volunteers his time and experience as an archaeologist in many ways. He often assists graduate students and local government agencies by volunteering his time, for example to the BLM, as a crewmember for field excavation on their projects. Mr. Richards presents papers concerning his work and research to professional organizations, historical societies, and local schools. As Chairperson of the City of Thousand Oaks’ Trails Advisory Committee, he is an advocate for the protection of cultural resources in his community. |
