PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Montana Long has six years of experience conducting
professional and academic archaeological research. He
received his M.S. in Anthropology from the University of
Oregon in 2007. During his academic tenure, he was twice
a teaching assistant at UO’s Northern Great Basin
Prehistory Project field schools, leading undergraduates
in pedestrian survey, testing and data recovery at sites
on Idaho’s Snake River Plain. He has specialized
expertise in GIS software, having assisted the BLM and
Oregon Department of Transportation in developing and
streamlining their electronic cultural resource
databases. His Master’s research used GIS to investigate
the impacts of climate change on prehistoric site
distributions in southern Idaho.
Mr.Long has been involved in dozens of prehistoric and
historic survey, testing and data recovery projects,
primarily in Oregon, but also in Idaho and southern
California. In 2007, he served as Staff Archaeologist
for the Oregon Department of State Lands. In this
capacity he was responsible for most aspects of the
department’s archaeology program, including project
planning, background searches and data management,
pedestrian survey and site identification, production of
technical reports and management recommendations.
