PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Ms. Akyuz has worked in archaeology and cultural resource management in California and Mexico and has surveyed, excavated, and recorded numerous prehistoric and historic sites. She has written numerous cultural resource assessment reports and has sorted and analyzed artifacts from many excavations. She has supervised many archaeological survey and excavation projects.
Her research has focused on prehistoric settlement patterns in California and the Great Basin with a concentration on the Owens Valley and on the south central coast. She currently works surveying, excavating, and analyzing archaeological sites in southern California. Her master’s thesis analyzes prehistoric ceramics from the Honanki Pueblo in Arizona. Her other research involves analyzing lithics from San Nicolas Island and assessing archaeological sites on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and in the Great Basin. Ms. Akyuz has served as an archivist and researcher at the South Central Coastal Information Center where she conducted record searches, managed site records and survey reports, and plotted sites and surveys. She also has served at California State University Fullerton as an archaeological laboratory director and a graduate assistant, helping to teach archaeological laboratory analysis and archaeological survey classes.

Ms. Akyuz has conducted surveys and excavations for numerous federal, state, county, and city agencies, including the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps, the United States Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, California State Parks, the California Department of Forestry (CALFIRE), the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, the County of San Diego, the North County Transit District, and the City of San Diego. She has extensive knowledge in the applications of the CEQA, NHPA, NEPA, and NAGPRA.
